Reunions and Birthdays and other Special Gatherings at the York House Inn

The York House Inn is a great place for family reunions, birthday gatherings or other events, large or small.  The Inn can host groups of up to 125 people and is also appropriate for smaller more intimate gatherings.  It sits on 4.5 acres, which include a hemlock forest, a running creek, and a pre-Civil War Spring House.  The Inn has 12 guest rooms, a full kitchen for guest use, a living room and dining room, and a lower level offering 1000 square feet of gathering space.  Your gathering can be as formal or informal as you like.

The dining room and living room have working fireplaces at each end and the lower level also has a working fireplace in the renovated servants’ quarters.  A staircase connects the two levels for easy access.  A two-story porch spans the front of the house, providing beautiful views and a wonderful place for people to mingle and socialize.

Expansive lawns offer wonderful outdoor areas for picnics, barbecues, cookouts or more formal dinners. The lawns also provide a great area for badminton, croquet, and volleyball and the Inn has an on-site shuffle board court.  A creek runs in back of the Inn.  A small bridge, across the creek, takes guests into a very large, cleared alcove in the Hemlock woods.  The property also has several walking trails.  For outdoor events tents and tables and chairs are also available at reasonable prices from a local vendor.

In addition, indoor space is available in the upstairs dining and living rooms as well as in the 1000 square feet in the newly renovated lower level.  The lower level features the former servants’ quarters, which were recently restored to expose 20 ft. hand hewn Chestnut beams, the original stone walls and fireplace.  These quarters have been converted into a beautiful, unique socializing area.

Guests are welcome to bring food or refreshments; prepare their own food in the guest kitchen; or have catered events.  Breakfast is included in the room price. Guests are also welcome to bring their own beverages, including alcohol.

The twelve guest rooms have been refurbished.  The guest rooms all have private baths and entrances.  All rooms have heart pine or hardwood floors and most have sitting areas.  Each room has its own heater and air conditioning unit.  Most bathrooms and showers have been tiled.  The guest rooms consist of: two rooms with king beds, three rooms with two double-beds, five rooms with queen beds, and two rooms with double beds.  The Inn can sleep up to 30 people.  We are happy to assist you in finding additional accommodations if the Inn cannot accommodate your entire party.

The York House Inn offers a range of activities for families or groups that want to investigate the surrounding areas as part of their stay.  Many National Park and recreation areas such as Black Rock Mountain State Park and Tallulah Falls are within 10 miles of the Inn.  In addition many trails in the local area link to the Appalachian Trail.  Horseback riding is available.  Also, the area is famous for rafting on the Chattooga in the summer and skiing, in places such as Maggie Valley, in the winter.   We would be happy to refer you to local outfitters if you would like to plan an outdoor adventure as part of your special event.

Other activities include visiting shops of local artists and shopping venues, which ranges from high end galleries and boutiques to flea markets.  Rabun County also hosts several new wineries and is part of the North Georgia wine route.  The Inn is 14 miles from Highlands, NC; 45 miles from Cherokee NC and approximately 75 miles Asheville NC.

The Inn is also centrally located so that it’s a convenient gathering point for groups dispersed across the Southeast.  The Inn is approximately two hours from Atlanta.  Highway 441 is the closest main road to the Inn.  This highway is being expanded into a continuous four-lane highway which will run from Atlanta to Cherokee, NC.  Athens is approximately three hours from other southeast cities, such as Charlotte, NC and Greenville, SC.
